Accidents and sharp objects can cause cuts, tears, or injuries to the gums, tongue, and mouth.

What to do during a dental emergency

Call us immediately at (908) 851-9100 — The sooner you reach out, the better we can help.

  • For a knocked-out tooth: Handle it by the crown (not the root) and store it in milk, saline, or saliva until you can get to our office.
  • For a broken or chipped tooth: Keep the area clean and use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • For a severe toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any debris. Avoid putting aspirin directly on your gums or tooth.

Even if the pain subsides, don’t ignore it! Hidden infections or damage can worsen over time. Call us right away and our Union emergency dentist can help you fast.

Easy Payment Options

At Smile Care of Union, we make dental care accessible and stress-free with a variety of payment options to suit your needs. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards and offer financing through CareCredit.

We also accept most major dental insurance plans.

No matter your situation, we’ll help you find the best option to make high-quality dental care accessible.

FAQ about dental emergencies

What should I do if I lose an adult tooth?

  • Call us immediately. Time is critical in saving your tooth.
  • Try to reposition it. If possible, gently place the tooth back in the socket without forcing it.
  • Store it properly. If it won’t stay in place, put it in milk, saline, or saliva to keep it moist.
  • Get to our office ASAP. The sooner we see you, the better the chance of saving your tooth.

Is my tooth infected?

Watch for these signs of a dental infection:

  • Constant toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling in your face or gums
  • Pain when biting or chewing

If you notice these symptoms, don’t wait — call us right away. Infections can spread quickly and may require urgent care.

Does a toothache mean I need an extraction?

Not necessarily! Many toothaches can be treated with a filling, crown, or root canal rather than extraction. We’ll evaluate your tooth and provide the best treatment option to relieve pain and preserve your natural smile.
